Day AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA, RECYCLING, HYPERTENSION, TELECOMMUNICATIONS, and INFORMATION SOCIETY

World DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA (aversion, prejudice, or discrimination against homosexuals), TRANSPHOBIA (aversion against transgender individuals), AND BIOFOBIA (prejudice against people based on biological characteristics): the goal is to raise awareness about the importance of respecting Homosexuals (attraction to individuals of the same gender), Transsexuals (individuals seeking to undergo social and/or medical transition to align their body with their gender identity), and Transgender individuals (individuals whose gender identity differs from that assigned at birth). The chosen date, May 17th, commemorates the removal of homosexuality from the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), which occurred in 1990.

World RECYCLING DAY: established by UNESCO in 2005, the date aims to raise awareness about the importance of Environmental Preservation. Recycling contributes to Waste Reduction, Conservation of Natural Resources, Pollution Reduction, and encourages the Adoption of More Sustainable Practices.

World HYPERTENSION DAY: created by the World Hypertension League in 2005, seeks to increase awareness about Arterial Hypertension, a medical condition characterized by high blood pressure, which is one of the main Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Diseases.

World TELECOMMUNICATIONS and INFORMATION SOCIETY DAY: a day established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in 1969 to commemorate its founding in 1865. In 2006, the UN also proclaimed May 17th as World Information Society Day. So today’s date highlights the importance of Telecommunications and Information Technology in Modern Society.
