CORCOVADO is much more than a Tourist Attraction: it symbolizes Faith, Art, and Human Ingenuity, and its 93 years celebrate this lasting legacy. Learn more:

Construction: the idea of erecting a monument on top of Corcovado dates back to the 19th century, but it was only in 1921 that the project gained momentum, as part of the celebrations of Brazil’s Independence Centenary. Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa conceived the project, with the support of French architect Paul Landowski, who was responsible for creating the statue’s head and hands.

Characteristics: the Christ the Redeemer statue is 30 meters tall, standing on an 8-meter pedestal. Its open arms span 28 meters, symbolizing Peace and Welcoming. Built from reinforced concrete and covered with soapstone, the work took around 9 years to complete.

Significance: on October 12, 1931, Christ the Redeemer was officially inaugurated. An interesting fact is that the signal to turn on the lighting was sent via radio from Rome by Italian scientist Guglielmo Marconi, but due to atmospheric conditions, the attempt failed, and the system was activated locally. Since then, it has become a symbol of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. In 2007, it was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Tourism: visited by millions of people annually, Christ the Redeemer offers a spectacular view of the City of Rio de Janeiro. In 2012, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Corcovado: it originates from the word “corcova,” meaning a hump or curved elevation, associated with the back of an animal, such as a camel. The term was used to describe the shape of the hill, which resembles a large hump when seen from afar (see the photo). Thus, the name “Morro do Corcovado” reflects its geography, with a steep elevation and a curved silhouette. This visual feature inspired the early inhabitants to call the place Corcovado. IT’S WORTH VISITING!”
