DIA 1º DE MARÇO DE 1565: marca a fundação da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, data em que é celebrado o aniversário da capital fluminense que se tornou  a capital do BRASIL até a construção de Brasília em 1960. Já a transferência da capital para o Rio de Janeiro ocorreu em 1763, quando a cidade substituiu Salvador. Essa mudança foi realizada pelo Marquês de Pombal, então primeiro-ministro de Portugal, por motivos estratégicos e administrativos.

MARCH 1st, 1565: marks the foundation of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the date on which the anniversary of the Fluminense capital, which became the capital of BRAZIL until the construction of Brasília in 1960, is celebrated. The transfer of the capital to Rio de Janeiro occurred in 1763 when the city replaced Salvador. This change was carried out by the Marquis of Pombal, then Prime Minister of Portugal, for strategic and administrative reasons.

DIA 20 DE JANEIRO: outra data significativa para o Rio de Janeiro por ser o dia dedicado a SÃO SEBASTIÃO, o padroeiro da cidade.

Existem várias razões para São Sebastião ser o padroeiro do Rio de Janeiro. Uma delas é a tradição que remonta ao século XVI, quando os portugueses, liderados por Estácio de Sá, fundaram a cidade onde hoje está o bairro do FLAMENGO. Acredita-se que, durante a batalha para expulsar os franceses que ocupavam a região, os portugueses invocaram a proteção de São Sebastião e prometeram construir uma igreja em sua homenagem se vencessem. Após a vitória, a promessa foi cumprida, e uma igreja dedicada a São Sebastião foi erguida, tornando-o o padroeiro da cidade. Além disso, o Santo é considerado um símbolo de proteção contra a peste e outras doenças, o que é especialmente relevante para o Rio de Janeiro, que historicamente enfrentou epidemias de doenças como a febre amarela.

 JANUARY 20th: Another significant date for Rio de Janeiro as it is the day dedicated to SAINT SEBASTIAN, the city’s patron saint. There are several reasons for Saint Sebastian to be the patron saint of Rio de Janeiro. One of them is the tradition dating back to the 16th century when the Portuguese, led by Estácio de Sá, founded the city where the FLAMENGO neighborhood stands today. It is believed that during the battle to expel the French who occupied the region, the Portuguese invoked the protection of Saint Sebastian and promised to build a church in his honor if they were victorious. After the victory, the promise was fulfilled, and a church dedicated to Saint Sebastian was erected, making him the patron saint of the city. Additionally, the Saint is considered a symbol of protection against plague and other diseases, which is especially relevant to Rio de Janeiro, which historically faced epidemics of diseases such as yellow fever.

CARIOCA e CAPITAL FLUMINENSE: no período colonial, os nascidos na Capitania do Rio de Janeiro eram conhecidos por “cariocas”, devido ao Rio Carioca que fornecia água potável a cidade. A partir de 1783 foi criado o termo “fluminense” que deriva do latim “flumen”, que significa “rio” em alusão a cidade capital do Estado.

CARIOCA and FLUMINENSE CAPITAL: During the colonial period, those born in the Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro were known as “cariocas,” due to the Carioca River, which provided drinking water to the city. From 1783, the term “fluminense” was created, derived from the Latin “flumen,” meaning “river,” in allusion to the capital city of the State of Rio de Janeiro.
