Health and Quality of Life After 60: 14

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day: established by the UN and the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse in 2006. Its aim is to raise awareness in society about the importance of protecting the elderly from all forms of violence, whether physical, psychological, financial, or neglect.

Acre’s Emancipation Anniversary: also known as Acre State Day, this date marks the elevation of Acre to statehood, which occurred in 1962.

Global Wind Day: celebrated since 2007, this day was created by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and the Wind Energy Association (EWEA) to celebrate wind energy and promote its significance as a renewable and sustainable energy source.

Paleontologist Day: coinciding with the founding of the Brazilian Society of Paleontology (SBP), the date was established by the Government of the State of São Paulo (Law 2,818 of 04-30-1981). It is not officially recognized by SBP, which only acknowledges March 7th as their official day.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

  1. Types of Violence against the Elderly: violence against the elderly can be physical, psychological, financial, sexual, or result from neglect. It’s important to be alert to signs of abuse, which may include unexplained bruises, changes in behavior, unauthorized withdrawals of funds, poor hygiene, or lack of medical care.

  2. Prevention and Reporting: preventing violence against the elderly involves education, awareness, and strengthening support. Family members, caregivers, and friends should observe signs of abuse and report cases of violence to protect the rights of the elderly. In BRAZIL, the hotline 100 is available for reporting.
  3. Respect and Dignity: respect and dignity for the elderly are collective responsibilities. Valuing the experience and contributions of the elderly, as well as ensuring they have access to healthcare and quality of life, is essential for an inclusive society.

Aging with health and dignity is a right for all. Investing in the quality of life of the elderly and raising awareness about the importance of protecting them are crucial steps toward a better future. Today, on the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we reinforce the need for actions that promote safer and healthier aging for ALL OF US.
