MOTHER’s Day, International Nursing Day, Plant Health Day, Awareness and Coping with Fibromyalgia, and Buddha’s Birthday

Health and Quality of Life After 60 Years: 06

MOTHER’S DAY: it’s a special occasion usually celebrated on the second Sunday of May as a tribute to Motherhood and Love, Sacrifice, and Dedication of Mothers. The origin of the date dates back to Ancient Greece, where the Greeks paid tribute to Rhea, the mother of the Gods. In the Christian era, it became associated with the celebration of the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus. The modern version of the celebration originated in the United States when Anna Jarvis, in 1908, decided to honor the memory of her Mother. In 1914, the president of the United States officially declared the day a National holiday.

INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY: this date marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a nursing pioneer born on 12/05/1820. She is recognized for her contributions to the profession, especially for her work during the Crimean War.

INTERNATIONAL PLANT HEALTH DAY: established by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) to highlight the importance of plants in ensuring global food security, preserving biodiversity, and sustainable development.

NATIONAL FIBROMYALGIA AWARENESS DAY: the date aims to increase awareness of this chronic condition. Fibromyalgia is a disease characterized by diffuse musculoskeletal pain and sensitivity in specific points of the body. In addition to pain, symptoms include fatigue, sleep disturbances, muscle stiffness, and cognitive difficulties (anxiety and depression).

ANNIVERSARY OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI: it is an opportunity for Buddhists to reflect on the teachings of the Buddha and renew their commitment to spiritual practice, compassion, and the pursuit of enlightenment. It is a time of joy, reverence, and gratitude for the Buddha’s legacy.

Emotional Health Above 60 Years: as mentioned (see publication of 11/05), Emotional Health plays an important role in the physical, mental, and social well-being of all human beings.

Grief and Loss: the loss of close family members and friends can trigger sadness and grief, impacting emotional health. Strategies to mitigate this impact include seeking emotional support in groups, individual counseling, and even attending community centers.

Physical Limitations and Chronic Illnesses: aging can lead to frustration and loss of autonomy. To mitigate these effects: take care of the body, follow medical treatments, and adapt to conditions and environments.

Stigma and Discrimination: age-related stigma can contribute to low self-esteem and social isolation. To mitigate these issues, it is important to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the elderly and combat negative stereotypes.

Loneliness, Social Isolation, and Lack of Family Support: loneliness can result in feelings of sadness and depression. To mitigate this, it is essential to foster social connections in groups, attend leisure centers, and even participate in volunteer programs. Additionally, the lack of family support makes the elderly feel abandoned. Encouraging family involvement in the care and support of the elderly can make a big difference.

Retirement, Role Change, and Financial Concerns: retirement can prompt a reassessment of identity and life purpose, impacting emotional health. To mitigate these effects, it is important to seek new work opportunities, community involvement, and post-retirement activities. Additionally, financial uncertainty is another source of stress and anxiety for the elderly, especially for those who depend on pensions or social security benefits.

Access to Mental Health Services: essential for the emotional well-being of the elderly. However, many face barriers such as a lack of mental health professionals, as well as the stigma associated with seeking this type of help due to a lack of awareness.

Self-Esteem and Self-Image: physical changes associated with aging can affect the self-esteem and self-image of the elderly. To mitigate these effects, it is crucial to promote a culture of respect and appreciation for the experience and wisdom associated with advanced age, as well as to raise awareness about the nature and dignity of the aging process.
