World Blood Donor Day: this day is celebrated to thank blood donors and raise awareness about the need for regular donations to ensure the quality, safety, and availability of blood and its products. The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Karl Landsteiner (1808-1943), an Austrian immunologist who discovered the ABO blood groups, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1930. It was established by the WHO in 2004.
