They exchange gifts, flowers, chocolates, and affectionate messages, making it an important day for commerce. In Brazil, the choice of date is related to Saint Anthony’s Day, celebrated on June 13th. Saint Anthony is known as the “Matchmaker Saint,” and the proximity of the two dates was a marketing strategy adopted by advertiser João Doria in 1948 to boost the sales of a gift shop. The idea caught on, and since then, Valentine’s Day is celebrated on June 12th.
